I wish I had figured this out sooner. Actually, I used to know this, but I had forgotten.
I count DOWN when I do push ups. That way, you have to REALLY want to stop in order to stop before you're done. That makes it easier to get done.
But, I'm still trying to get them all done in one set.
I'm thinking Alex is a genius for getting us started on this... my back pain is actually going away -- something that a couple years of physical therapy wasn't accomplishing.

I recommend removing the black things sticking into your spine before doing any more pushups.
I'm thinking your idea is a really good one for one simple reason - that 95th pushup this morning was really hard.
If I did that one first, while I was still fresh, and then did the first one (which was easy) last, that might make this quite pleasant.
Testing...
Go Pack Go!
I am up to 14, fortunately the dog made my starting number really low, but I do feel it, sadly enough... I tried the counting down thing, it was easier, I could probably do 14 more now that I have had a break, but I don't really want to set the standard of doubling everyday!
Alex, I think before long your son will be bench pressing you guys, in between 3-a-days, so you might ought to get used to that!
If I take a break I run the risk of not starting again.
Sara - when I started this I think I could do 10. Then I added on till I plateau'd at 30 for the longest time, mentally locked in.
It wasn't 'till I got mad at myself, threw down 35, that I could break the mental hangup on 30. It wasn't until 42 that I thought of counting down...
I'm still not to the point where the US Army would count 100% of my pushups... I'm thinking they'd probably count half of them and the other half they'd be saying "you call that a push up, Mister!?! I've seen Wisconsin Toddlers do better pushups!"
Gawleeey I need one of those.
I guess you would have to say my pushups are "medium" distance now that I do them with flat hands. When I did them with fists, it was close-in and more arm-centric.
Eric
I have my hands out wide, and every now and then my forehead touches the floor, although I try to keep my neck extended (head "up").
I can feel various muscle groups, from back to belly to butt to legs, adjusting to the push up as my arms get tired and I also notice I rock forward or back ward on my toes to shift which part of the deltoid muscles is doing the work, all without thinking of it. I start off with an exhale/down, inhale/up, but by about 20 I am doing a full breath with each push-up.
(By 40 the oxygen tank is on)
I'm disappointed no one commented on my humorous comment about switching the first and last ones. At least to congratulate me on using the bold and italic tags correctly.
guess you couldn't hear me giggling from here :) My forehead does not by any means touch the floor, but I try - and no wussy knee pushups
So I think I will continue 2 sets a day, increasing each set by one a day... so I just did my first 15, and my nose comes within about 3 inches of the floor (maybe 3.5 at the end) and I definitely feel my tummy contracting pretty cool - who ever thought all four wades would be worker outers at the same time.....
Damn sister! Two-a-days! Good for you!
Any change in the way your arms feel yet? I started to notice some structural changes earlier than I thought I would. Those have slowed down, but I still like what I see more than I used to like what I used to see.
46, counting down, anywhere from 2 to 6 inches from the floor, minimal toe rocking.
Yes, we totally got the humor in the post, but Alex, you are routinely at least 96% that funny, so just being up 4 points didn't flag me that I should respond.
For that, I am sorry.
It was funny.
The bold and ITALICS was very impressive, but unfortunately for you I didn't notice it until you pointed it out that it was up to you to do that. NOW I'm impressed.
Thanks!
Still at 50.
